What is root canal therapy, and when do I need it?
Root canal therapy in Clearwater removes infected or damaged pulp from inside a tooth, cleans and seals it, and saves the tooth from extraction. It's needed when deep decay, a crack or trauma reaches the pulp, often causing severe pain, lingering sensitivity or swelling. At Boulevard Dental in Clearwater, FL, Dr. Jason Kopakin performs root canals under local anesthesia and often restores the tooth with a CEREC same-day crown.
01Root Canal Therapy
Relieving pain and saving your natural tooth
Few procedures carry as much undeserved anxiety as a root canal. The truth is that modern treatment is routine and comfortable — it relieves the pain of an infected tooth rather than causing it. For most patients, it feels much like getting a filling.
Dr. Kopakin provides root canal therapy in Clearwater with a focus on precision, efficiency and your comfort. Our goal is always to save your natural tooth, because no restoration fully replicates the feel and function of the tooth you were born with.
If you have significant tooth pain, prolonged sensitivity or swelling — or you've been told you may need a root canal — don't wait. Early treatment almost always means a simpler procedure and a better outcome.
Save your natural tooth
Treating the infection lets you keep your tooth instead of replacing it with an implant or bridge.
Comfort-first care
Local anesthesia keeps the tooth fully numb, and we take extra time with anxious patients.
Same-day crown option
CEREC technology lets us often restore the treated tooth in one additional visit, without waiting on an outside lab.
02Treatments
Signs you may need a root canal
Sometimes there are no symptoms until an infection has progressed — which is why regular exams and X-rays matter. Call us if you notice any of these:
- 01
Severe, persistent toothache
Especially pain that throbs or gets worse when you lie down.
- 02
Lingering sensitivity
Sensitivity to hot or cold that lasts long after the food or drink is gone.
- 03
Pain when biting
Sharp pain when you bite down or chew.
- 04
A darkening tooth
Discoloration of a single tooth can signal damage to the pulp inside.
- 05
Swollen or tender gums
Swelling, tenderness or a pimple-like bump (abscess) on the gum near the tooth.
- 06
Bad taste or odor
A persistent bad taste or smell near one area — or pain in a tooth that was treated before.
03Our approach
The root canal process in Clearwater
Most root canals are completed in one to two appointments, depending on the complexity of the case.
- 01
Examination and X-rays
Dr. Kopakin examines the tooth and reviews digital X-rays to understand the infection, the shape and number of canals and the condition of the surrounding bone.
- 02
Numbing and protection
Local anesthesia fully numbs the area — even an infected tooth can be numbed effectively. A small rubber sheet called a dental dam keeps the tooth clean and dry.
- 03
Cleaning the canals
Through a small opening, the infected pulp is removed and each canal is carefully shaped and disinfected with precise instruments and antimicrobial solutions.
- 04
Filling and sealing
The clean canals are filled with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha to prevent reinfection, and the opening is sealed with a temporary or permanent filling.
- 05
Protective crown
Most treated teeth need a crown to prevent fracture. With CEREC same-day crowns, we can often complete it in a single additional appointment.

04Root Canal Therapy
Is root canal therapy painful?
Almost never. The pain people associate with root canals comes from the infection itself — the treatment relieves it by removing the source. Under local anesthesia, the procedure should feel no more uncomfortable than having a cavity filled.
Mild soreness for a few days afterward is normal as the surrounding tissue heals, and over-the-counter pain relievers are usually all you need. If you're nervous, let us know when you call. We'll take extra time to explain every step and make sure you feel at ease.
05Root Canal Therapy
Root canal or extraction?
A root canal and crown usually cost more upfront than a simple extraction. But once you factor in replacing the extracted tooth with an implant, bridge or partial denture, saving your natural tooth is often the more economical long-term choice. We'll walk you through a detailed comparison at your visit.
New patients & emergency appointments are welcome.
06Questions, answered
Root Canal Therapy FAQs
Still have questions? Call our Clearwater office at(727) 799-4897.
01How do I know if I need a root canal?
The most reliable way is an exam and X-rays. Common signs include severe or throbbing pain, lingering sensitivity to heat or cold, pain when biting, swelling near the tooth or a pimple-like bump on the gum. Some teeth that need root canal therapy show no symptoms at all.
02How long does a root canal take?
Most root canals at our Clearwater office take one to two appointments of about 60 to 90 minutes each. Complex cases — such as teeth with multiple or curved canals or significant infection — may need more time. You'll get a realistic estimate before treatment begins.
03Will I be awake during the procedure?
Yes. You're fully awake, but the tooth and surrounding area are completely numb. You may feel pressure and movement, but not pain. If you feel any discomfort, let us know and we'll give you more anesthesia right away.
04Do I need a crown after a root canal?
In most cases, yes. A treated tooth is more prone to fracture, and a crown protects it, distributes biting forces evenly and seals out bacteria. Our CEREC same-day crowns can often be completed in a single additional appointment.
05How long is recovery after a root canal?
Most patients feel back to normal within two to three days. Mild soreness is expected and manageable with over-the-counter pain relievers. If pain is severe, worsens after the third day or comes with swelling or fever, call us promptly.
06Can a tooth get infected again after a root canal?
It's uncommon when the tooth is treated thoroughly and properly crowned. Reinfection can happen if the seal is compromised, a canal was missed or a new crack develops — which is why we monitor treated teeth at every exam.
07Can antibiotics cure a tooth infection instead?
No. Antibiotics can temporarily ease symptoms, but they can't remove the infected pulp inside the tooth, so the infection returns. Root canal therapy in Clearwater addresses the source and saves the tooth; antibiotics may be used alongside it, not in place of it. A dental abscess left untreated can spread to the jaw and neck, so call us right away if you suspect one.
08Does insurance cover root canal therapy in Clearwater?
Most plans partially cover root canals, subject to your deductible, co-pay and annual maximum, with the crown usually covered separately. We verify your benefits before treatment. Uninsured patients save 20% on most procedures with our membership plan, and financing is available.
