01Tooth Extractions
When removing a tooth is the right decision
No one wants to lose a tooth. But sometimes removing one is the most important step in protecting the rest of your smile — stopping infection, relieving pain and making room for healthy teeth.
We always explore every option to save a tooth first. When an extraction is truly the best path, you'll be in skilled, experienced hands, whether it's a straightforward simple extraction or a more involved surgical case.
Just as important, you won't leave with a gap and no plan. We'll talk through your replacement options before or at the time of your extraction, so you know exactly what comes next.
Comfort first
Local anesthesia fully numbs the area. You may feel pressure, but if anything feels uncomfortable, we stop and adjust.
Simple to surgical
From visible teeth to broken or impacted wisdom teeth, we handle a full range of extraction cases.
A plan for what's next
Implants, bridges or partial dentures — we'll help you choose the replacement that fits your health, lifestyle and budget.
02Treatments
When an extraction may be necessary
Extraction is never our first choice. These are the situations where it's often the right one.
- 01
Severe tooth decay
When decay is too deep for a filling, crown or root canal, removing the tooth keeps infection from spreading to nearby teeth and bone.
- 02
Advanced gum disease
Periodontitis can destroy the bone and tissue around a tooth, leaving it loose and impossible to stabilize.
- 03
Trauma or fracture
A badly cracked or broken tooth may be beyond repair, especially when the break extends below the gumline.
- 04
Impacted wisdom teeth
Third molars without room to erupt can become trapped or angled, causing pain, infection, crowding and damage to neighboring teeth.
- 05
Overcrowding
In some cases, removing a tooth creates the space needed for proper alignment before braces or Invisalign.
- 06
Stubborn baby teeth
A primary tooth that won't fall out can block the permanent tooth beneath it. A quick extraction resolves this.
03Our approach
What to expect during your extraction
The word “extraction” can make anyone nervous. Here's what actually happens at Boulevard Dental — and it's usually much faster than patients expect.
- 01
Careful planning
We review your health history, medications and X-rays to plan the safest, most efficient approach for your tooth.
- 02
Complete numbing
Local anesthesia numbs the tooth and surrounding tissue. You may feel pressure, but you shouldn't feel pain.
- 03
Gentle removal
A simple extraction loosens and lifts the tooth out in one piece. A surgical extraction uses a small incision and may remove the tooth in sections.
- 04
Aftercare and support
Gauze is placed over the site and you'll go home with detailed aftercare instructions. Our team is always available for questions during recovery.

04Tooth Extractions
Types of extractions we perform
Simple extractions are for teeth that are visible above the gumline and can be removed in one piece. Most patients find them far more comfortable than they anticipated.
Surgical extractions are used when a tooth has broken at the gumline, hasn't fully erupted or needs to be removed in sections — including many wisdom teeth.
Wisdom tooth extractions are among the most common. We monitor wisdom teeth with X-rays and recommend removal when the risk of keeping them outweighs the benefit. Removing them early, before the roots are fully formed, typically means a smoother procedure and faster recovery.
05Tooth Extractions
Replacing a tooth after extraction
Even a problem tooth plays a role in your bite. Once it's gone, neighboring teeth can shift and the jawbone can lose density over time. That's why we discuss replacement early.
- Dental implants — the most natural-looking and functioning long-term option, anchored in the jawbone
- Dental bridges — a fixed restoration supported by the neighboring teeth
- Partial dentures — a removable appliance that replaces one or more missing teeth
New patients & emergency appointments are welcome.
06Questions, answered
Tooth Extractions FAQs
Still have questions? Call our Clearwater office at(727) 799-4897.
01Do tooth extractions in Clearwater hurt?
The procedure itself shouldn't be painful. Local anesthesia numbs the tooth and surrounding area before we begin, and most patients feel pressure or movement but no pain. Some soreness for a few days afterward is normal and is usually managed with over-the-counter or prescribed pain relievers.
02How long does a tooth extraction take?
A simple extraction typically takes 20 to 40 minutes, including the time for anesthesia to take effect. Surgical and wisdom tooth extractions may take longer depending on complexity. We'll give you a realistic estimate at your consultation.
03How long is recovery?
Most patients feel significantly better within two to three days after a simple extraction. Surgical extractions may need up to a week. Swelling and mild discomfort are normal for the first 48 hours, and carefully following your aftercare instructions is the biggest factor in a smooth recovery.
04What is dry socket, and how do I avoid it?
Dry socket happens when the blood clot in the extraction site is dislodged or dissolves too early, exposing bone and nerves. To prevent it, avoid smoking, drinking through straws and vigorous rinsing for at least 48 hours. If pain suddenly increases two to three days later, call us right away — dry socket is treatable.
05Do I need to replace the extracted tooth?
In most cases, yes — wisdom teeth are the main exception. A gap can let surrounding teeth shift, affect your bite and lead to jawbone loss over time. We'll review implants, bridges and partial dentures with you so you can make an informed choice.
06Can I eat before my extraction, and can I drive home?
With local anesthesia only, eating beforehand is generally fine and you can usually drive yourself home. If sedation is part of your plan, you'll typically need to avoid food and drink for several hours and arrange a ride. We'll give you specific instructions when you schedule.
07I'm nervous about tooth extractions. How does your Clearwater team help?
Extraction anxiety is very common. Tell us your concerns when you call — we'll walk you through exactly what to expect, go at your pace and make sure you're comfortable before we begin. Many patients tell us afterward it was far easier than they imagined.
08How soon can I return to work?
Most patients return to work the next day after a simple extraction. If your job is physical or your extraction was surgical, an extra day or two of rest may be recommended. We'll give you clear guidance before you leave.
