What are dental crowns, and where can I get them in Clearwater?
Dental crowns in Clearwater are tooth-shaped caps that cover a damaged or weakened tooth from the gumline up, restoring its shape, strength and appearance. They're recommended for large cavities, cracks, teeth weakened by big fillings, and teeth treated with a root canal. At Boulevard Dental in Clearwater, FL, Dr. Jason Kopakin places metal-free porcelain and ceramic crowns, including CEREC same-day crowns.
01Dental Crowns
Full-coverage protection for damaged and weakened teeth
When a tooth has been badly damaged by decay, fracture or wear — or weakened by a large filling or root canal — a crown is often the most effective and durable way to save it. A crown covers the entire visible tooth, protecting what remains and returning it to full function.
Our dental crowns in Clearwater are made from high-quality porcelain and ceramic, carefully matched to the color and contour of your natural teeth. Whether you need one crown or several as part of a larger plan, you'll get a result that's strong, natural-looking and built to last.
If you've been told you need a crown, or a tooth has been causing pain or sensitivity, our team is ready to help.
Same-day CEREC crowns
Many crowns are designed, milled and placed in one appointment — no temporary crown and no second visit.
Metal-free and natural
Porcelain and ceramic materials are shade-matched to blend seamlessly with your surrounding teeth.
Built for everyday life
A well-cared-for crown can last 10 to 15 years or more, handling the full force of biting and chewing.
02Treatments
When a dental crown is needed
A crown restores a tooth's shape, size, strength and appearance. Dr. Kopakin may recommend one if you have:
- 01
Extensive decay
A cavity too large to be restored effectively with a filling.
- 02
A cracked or broken tooth
A fractured tooth that needs full coverage to keep it from breaking further.
- 03
A large, failing filling
A tooth significantly weakened by an oversized existing filling.
- 04
A recent root canal
A treated tooth that needs to be protected and strengthened for the long term.
- 05
A misshapen or discolored tooth
A tooth that can't be corrected with whitening or veneers.
- 06
An implant or bridge
A crown is the visible tooth on top of a dental implant and the anchor that holds a bridge in place.
03Our approach
What to expect with CEREC same-day crowns
For most patients, CEREC technology lets us complete a permanent crown in a single appointment. Here's how it works.
- 01
Examination and digital X-rays
Dr. Kopakin examines the tooth and reviews digital X-rays to assess the damage and confirm a crown is the right solution.
- 02
Gentle tooth preparation
With local anesthesia for comfort, any decay is removed and the tooth is shaped to create an ideal foundation for the crown.
- 03
Digital scan instead of putty
A small handheld scanner captures a precise 3D image of your tooth in minutes — far more comfortable than traditional impression material.
- 04
On-screen design and in-office milling
Your crown is designed in our CEREC software, refined for fit and appearance, then milled from a high-quality ceramic block in about 15 to 20 minutes while you relax.
- 05
Permanent placement
We check the fit, color and bite, bond your crown in place and make final adjustments so it feels completely natural.

04Dental Crowns
When a lab-made crown is the better choice
Most patients are good candidates for CEREC. In some complex cases — such as crowns that need highly customized shading or full-mouth reconstructions — a traditionally fabricated crown may be recommended instead.
In that case, the tooth is prepared and impressions are sent to a dental lab. You'll wear a temporary crown for about two to three weeks, then return for permanent placement once your custom crown is ready.

Caring for your new crown
Most patients adapt quickly. Mild sensitivity to hot, cold or pressure is normal for the first one to two weeks and typically fades on its own.
- Avoid very hard or sticky foods for the first 24 hours
- Brush twice a day with a soft-bristled brush and non-abrasive fluoride toothpaste
- Floss daily, paying special attention to where the crown meets the gumline
- Avoid chewing ice, biting fingernails or using your teeth as tools
- Wear a custom night guard if you grind your teeth
- Keep up with regular cleanings and exams so we can check the crown's fit and condition
New patients & emergency appointments are welcome.
06Questions, answered
Dental Crowns FAQs
Still have questions? Call our Clearwater office at(727) 799-4897.
01Is a CEREC crown as strong as a traditional crown?
Yes. CEREC crowns are milled from high-quality ceramic that has been clinically shown to match the durability and longevity of traditionally fabricated crowns. They're designed to handle full biting and chewing forces, even on back teeth, and can last 10 to 15 years or more with proper care.
02Does getting a crown hurt?
The tooth is numbed with local anesthesia, so you shouldn't feel pain during preparation or placement. Some sensitivity and mild soreness for a few days afterward is normal and can be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers.
03How long does a same-day crown appointment take?
Most CEREC appointments take two to three hours from start to finish, including preparation, scanning, design, milling and placement. That replaces what would otherwise be two separate visits, saving you time overall.
04Will my crown look natural?
Absolutely. Our dental crowns in Clearwater are color-matched to your surrounding teeth, and the design software uses your own tooth anatomy as a guide. Most patients can't tell their crown apart from their natural teeth.
05Am I a candidate for a CEREC same-day crown?
Most patients who need a crown are. Dr. Kopakin will evaluate the tooth, your bite and your overall oral health to confirm CEREC is the best option. In some complex cases, a traditional lab-made crown may be recommended instead.
06What's the difference between a crown and a veneer?
A crown covers the entire visible tooth, providing full protection for a damaged or weakened tooth. A veneer covers only the front surface and is mainly cosmetic, used on teeth that are otherwise structurally sound.
07Do I need a follow-up visit after my crown is placed?
There's no required follow-up visit just for the crown, but call us if anything doesn't feel right. We'll monitor its fit and condition at your regular six-month exams and cleanings.
08Does insurance cover dental crowns in Clearwater?
Most plans that cover traditional crowns also cover CEREC crowns, since it's the same procedure delivered with a more advanced process. Coverage varies by plan, so we verify your benefits beforehand. Uninsured patients can save 20% on most procedures with our membership plan.
